What Is An Iced Latte?

Iced Latte

Cafe Latte, commonly known as “Latte” is known for its Italian origin. It is a combination of strong brewed espresso and freshly steamed milk. Unlike your regular coffee, Latte provides a subtle yet rich and creamy mouthfeel – owing to its espresso to milk ratio.

Traditionally Cafe Latte is prepared with 1 part of espresso and 2 parts of steamed milk. Popular as a breakfast coffee beverage, this delicious coffee is a hit amongst coffee connoisseurs.

Simply put, Iced Latte is the cooler version of traditional latte (pun intended). Supreme in taste and flavor, simple to assemble and prepare – this Iced Latte needs to be on your recipe book this summer!

What Kind Of Coffee Do You Need?

The ideal method of making a latte would be to use strongly brewed espresso. The flavor and the texture that an espresso shot brings to any coffee drink are truly unmatched.

However, if you wish to use any other form of brewed coffee – you can do so as well! Other methods like a French Press, Cold Brew, or Aeropress should give you almost similar results.

What Type Of Milk Do You Need?

The good news here is that there aren’t any single options for this. You can use any type of milk you prefer – Whole Milk, Oat Milk, Coconut Milk, Almond Milk, etc.

The only thing you need to watch out for is that you are using fresh and good-quality milk. Believe it or not, these factors can really impact how your drinks taste.

Iced Latte

Now that we are thorough with the basics, let’s get into a step-by-step process of making Iced Latte at home-

Ingredients

  • 2 shots of Espresso (60ml)
  • ½ cup Ice
  • 2 tsp simple syrup
  • 100 ml milk

Process

1. Begin by pulling espresso shots if that is your preferred method of coffee. You can also use any other form of brewed coffee like a french press, or Aeropress.

Note: It is recommended to use espresso for your lattes as the flavor & taste of espresso balance really well with the milk.

2. Let the espresso cool a little. Next, take a glass, a tall one preferably, and fill it halfway with ice. Pour the espresso on top of the ice.

3. Add the simple syrup to the espresso and ice. You can also use flavored syrups like hazelnut, vanilla, caramel, etc if you prefer to have a flavored coffe.

4. The final step is to add milk. For this part, you need to froth the milk, so it doubles in volume and creates and light and airy texture similar to the one you find in your regular latte. Traditionally lattes are steamed, but since this is an iced version instead of steaming the milk, we froth it.

5. Milk can be frothed using a good-quality electric milk frother or handheld milk frother. Here are our recommendations of the 10 best milk frothers for cold foam.

Note: If you do not have a milk frother, you can also try these alternative methods to froth milk without a milk frother.

6. Add the frothed milk on top of your coffee, scoop out any excessive foam and place it on top. There you have it, your Iced Latte is ready! Enjoy this chilled and refreshing coffee beverage.

Sweetener Ideas For Your Iced Latte

While many people prefer their coffee black and without any sugar. We absolutely love adding sweeteners and flavors to any coffee. Adding a sweet element to your daily coffee is a fun way to experiment with the flavors and taste.

There are a lot of ways through which you can sweeten your coffee, including-

1. Simple Syrup – Simple syrup is one of the most commonly used methods to sweeten coffee. It is basically a syrup made with equal parts of water and sugar. You will find a lot of baristas using this to add sugar to your coffee. If you want to go simple and not experiment this is the way to go!

2. Honey – Honey is another very famous alternative for sweetening coffee. The flavor of honey with coffee is really an individual preference. Some like the taste and some do not. Try it out for yourself to see if it works for you or not.

3. Maple Syrup – You’ve probably heard of Iced Maple Latte- Maple Syrup is a common way of adding some sweetness to the coffee. Many people who are health conscious and do not prefer adding simple syrup use this as an alternative. It is sweet, delicious and adds a beautiful flavor profile to your coffee.

4. Flavored Coffee Syrup – Flavored syrup is another famously used sweetener in coffees. One of our favorite methods to have some fun with regular coffee is to add some flavors to it. Cold Brew is basically a method of brewing coffee. Iced Latte on the other hand is a recipe made with espresso and milk.

Is it important to froth milk for an Iced Latte?

It isn’t absolutely necessary to froth milk for an iced latte, but it is preferable. Frothing milk for your latte adds a lot of texture and volume to your coffee.

Is Cold Brew stronger than an Iced Latte?

Iced Latte is not as strong as Cold Brew, this is because the milk added in latte balances and reduces the intense and strong flavor of the coffee. Cold Brew on the other hand is coffee grounds soaked in water overnight, therefore it is definitely stronger than iced coffee or iced latte.
